Blockchain basics
Layer 1, layer 2, and the networks in between
A plain-English introduction to how blockchain networks fit together.

Start with the essentials
Blockchain networks can divide responsibility in different ways. One system may execute transactions while another provides settlement or makes data available for inspection.
Labels such as layer 1 and layer 2 are a useful starting point, but they do not describe every security assumption. Upgrade permissions, proof systems, and exit mechanisms still need individual attention.
This sample lesson shows the intended reading experience. A finished lesson would use sourced diagrams and specific examples to explain those differences without implying that all networks are interchangeable.
